An angle on Advent
Advent, the time of waiting. That’s what all the prayers and reflections tell us. What they don’t tell us is that waiting is tedious and can make us anxious as well as expectant – and often ends in disappointment. The waiting of Advent is made more bearable because, from one angle, we know what is at the end of it – the remembrance of the birth of Jesus, the Word made flesh. That’s good news. But, the other aspect of Advent is not so easy: waiting for the time when time ends, the end of days, the coming of Christ again. That’s the one to keep us on our toes, watching, wondering – and, waiting.
